A Wet Golfing Affair @ Pulau Carey

Regretted staying up late the night before. Went for Snow Beer and then snooker with Allan, Ian and PJ. Slept at 3am. Now looking at the clock it was 6:30am and I was still in bed when I should be at the Proton Showroom along Kesas Highway. DANG!!

Today was supposed to be a golfing day with my Team Lead - Bobby and another colleague Kevin. Sigh.. Bobby is gonna kill me. I sms him saying that I just woke up and will not be able to make it. Just as the sms was sent, I decided to call him. Apparantly he just reached and I thought to myself... "Hey I might just be able to make it" and so I took a quick shower and was out of the house in minutes... reached the meeting point 15mins later... and then we were off!!

The journey to Pulau Carey was long. It was on the way to Banting. There was no signboard for the Golf Club nor Pulau Carey as a matter of fact. All there was, was a road sign 'Jalan Pulau Carey' and we turned in. We were greeted by a friendly police check point but were let thru. We were now in Sime Darby Plantation. The drive was a pleasant one. With the morning sunshine just nice, the oil palm trees on either side, workers were busy doing their jobs, it was a very nostalgic drive... after 10km or so... we finally reached the club house. It looked very colonial but had a nice feel to it.

As we got out of the car, we weren't prepared for what we saw... half the golf course was flooded!! OMG!!

We drove like 40km and now there was a chance we couldn't get to play. Bobby went into the club house and asked.. well it seemed that it had rained the entire night till morning but we were allowed to play.. as long as we didn't mind the water. Well since we had driven all the way out here, might as well play and I get to test my Nike shoes cos it was supposed to be waterproof and if water went in, I can claim warranty.

The course was a 9 hole walking course and the green fees were RM30. I had borrowed the trolley the night before from Helmi so I didn't have to rent it. Bobby carried his half set. Kevin rented one. Then were on our way.

The 1st hole was a killer. There was a flower garden in the centre and the green was across the road... 1st hole of the day... SUCKED!!

We didn't bother keeping score except in our on heads. Kevin was very new to golf and has not sepped into a course before. So naturally he was searching high and low for this balls that went out of bounds (OB) which dragged on the game. A few times his tee off went to the other tee off box and scared the living daylights out of the other golfers. It was funny!!

So far the shoe was doing its part of keeping my feet dry until the 4th hole and my feet literally was ankle deep in water. Well all was wet now. If it hadn't been for the water, it would have been a nice easy course. The sand trap was fairly easy and flat so was the green. The only thing was, water hazard was everywhere and sometimes it was not the flooded as we thought, it was actually a small lake with fishes swimming in it.

In the entire game, I lost 6 balls to water hazards, had 3 boogeys, 1 double boogey and the rest is no point mentioning. Bobby was also not having the best of days. His drive was good but his short game killed it for him!! All in all it was an OK day... could have been better but well thats golf.

We finished at 11:20 and we were off... ask if I would come back again? well maybe... if someone else drove... for RM30 it was kinda worth it.

Finally...30km/h Average!!

6pm - The usual Tuesday night ride was on. MEX highway and Kesas Loop. But due to my injury, I will be skipping the MEX highway ride as it would have put too much of a strain on my knee. Ian confirmed he was coming as well and before we left the office he said "If I don't smoke you tonight, I will change to a Road Bike"... CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!

9:30pm - Reached the Sri Petaling LRT just in time as the gang road off. Ian pushed from the start and was way ahead. I was last as usual, taking my time as I road into the bike lane and then *CRASH*... someone just ahead of me had crashed! It was Thomas... I stopped to ask the famous question "ARE YOU OK?"...

He had some cut and bruises on his right side but his bike was in worst condition. The shifters were out of alignment. The brakes were not working. The alignment between the handle bar and wheel was out. "I am going back... can't continue" he said. And after telling him how to go back to the mamak, he was off and then I realised as I looked at the road ahead.. "DAMN!! I am alone again!!"

I pushed myself as hard as I could. Just enough so as to not aggrivate the tendon but managed to maintain a 30++ average speed. The suck part about riding alone in Kesas Highway at night is having to go thru the tunnels alone!! Nearing the last toll along Kesas, I finally came up upon 3 MTBs from the Tat Seng group and overtook them and met with the others at the Bus Stop on the opposite side of the highway.

Now it was time for the ride back. I had barely 5mins to take my breath and we were off. Ian was leading in front. I drop 1 gear at a time and overtook Paul and then drafted behind Ian for a short while and then decided to go for it... Picked up to 45kmh and SMOOOKED him... hahaha... without looking back, I pushed on as far as I could but finally about after 500m, I tired out and then 1 by 1, Paul, Yong, Danny and Adam overtook me and started to leave me further and further behind.

Even so I pushed on... constantly looking at the cyclo meter... everytime it dropped below 30kmh, I would push and pull the pedal to bring it back up... and finally I reached the end of the ride. Immediately as I stopped, I took a look at the meter... AVG SPEED = 30kmh!! WOHOOOO!!!! MY TARGET HAS BEEN ACHIEVED!!!!

Looking back at the 1st time I road Kesas Highway, the avg speed was barely 20kmh, then it slowly picked up with each training.. 22, 24, 27 and now finally 30!!

Ian reached a few minutes later and I would not let him forget what he said to me early in the evening.. now lets hope he keeps to his word and gets his TREK MADONE 4.5

Later at the mamak, a stupid couple knocked Danny and Yong's bike causing it to fall slightly and had the nerve not to say sorry... but said that we should have parked the bike there... Bastards!! Thank god for them, it was crowded there at the mamak... if not...

A trip down my blogging lane...

As I was lying in bed, I was thinking about blogging. To me, I have always loved writing a diary. It was like a momento or a proof of my self being. I used to be a very angry and emotional person and a lot of my diary entries were written in BLOOD! or had its pages slashed and stuff... LOL!!

Then somewhere in 2005, I discovered the world of blogging. It was cos I had an interest in this girl and she had a blog so I followed her blog weekly and before long, I fell in love with the idea of blogging and so my 1st blog was born :

www.xanga.com/tgterence

It was my 1st stab at blogging and well it has most of my personal stuff in there. Mainly how I met my wife. Visiting back the blog brought back tons of memories. Some were good, some were bad... but hell thats all what life is about anyway. I stopped updating this blog when I moved to Puchong cos I had no internet connection here and also OCBC had blocked the access to this site.

Next I ventured on to Paintballing and that was my lifestyle, my religion. Thats was also the same time when I found out about free web hosting and so took a jab at it. I didn't want a conventional blog anymore so I created my own site :

http://www.liquidular.webs.com/

This site was mainly for Paintball stuff and it held my new blog as well. It was fun to do... but after a while, cos it was a free hosting, people started complaining that the site was slow on loading and it was a pain to upload new posting, that I decided to quit it.

And so I am here now, blogging on blogspot.com. And from what I can see, http://www.liquidular-cycling.blogspot.com/ is here to stay!!

GROUNDED FOR 2 WEEKS!!

It all started during the Fraser's Hill trip. During the downhill portion on the way back, the outside of my right knee started to hurt. The slight pain and discomfort lasted for 2 days, so I shrugged it off thinking it was just cos the muscle was tired.

1 week later, during the night ride on MEX & Kesas Highway, the pain came back. It was more painful now but still bearable and managed to complete the ride and somehow keep up a bit with the rest of the guys. After getting home, the pain was sharper and stronger. Couldn't walk properly for 2 days but after seeing the local GP and being prescribe Glucosamine, the pain went away. So once again I thought it was all good until....

Saturday - Yesterday... the Gombak-Ulu Yam-Batang Kali-Gotong Jaya-Gombak ride... after 2 big climbs at the start of Ulu Yam dam and the Batang Kali stretch, my knee gave way. The pain was super unbearable! Even after a short rest at the 'warong', I couldn't kick start without wincing in pain! *FUCK!!* So I loaded up the bike on to the support car and sat in it the rest of the journey.

After the whole ride had ended, I went to see the Sports Injury Clinic in Subang Jaya SS15. They were closing but I managed to get an appointment for this morning 9am.

9am - day of reckoning... went for my appointment at the clinic and after the doc examined the knee, did some X-ray and Ultrasound... it was my tendon!! It was inflamed and had a minor tear (Grade 1 Tear). I was to be off cycling or putting pressure on my knee for the next 2 weeks... Basically I was GROUNDED!! BUMMER!!

...and next week is the Hulu Langgat trip that I was looking forward for... SIGH!!!

Ulu Yam - Batang Kali - Gotong Jaya Ride

I am late!! As I stared at the clock. It was 4:30am. Thank God I stayed over at Taman Melawati. Rushed to eat my Meat Ball Pasta and was out of the house at 5:15am. Reached the meeting point - Petronas @ Batu Caves - at 5:30am. Adam, Yong, Apple, Kah Lyn, Aaron, Patrick and Fren were already there. The only one missing was Ari and Jo-Ann. If she wasn't coming, I wasn't riding as I was still a bit sick and needed the assurance of a support car. Allan had food poisoning and Helmi's daughter was sick so they couldn't make it.

At last, Ari & Jo-Ann reached and we parked our car at a nearby mamak stall and we were off! It was just 6am. It was totally pitch black dark as we made out way to Sungai Tua / Batu Dam. Just as we turned into the road to Batu Dam, what greeted us was a huge climb!! Super Steep!! And in the darkness we pushed and pushed all the way. It was damn tiring. Already on the lightest gear setting, I tried to free wheel a bit but just as I stopped pedaling, the wheel stopped too!! HOLY SHIT!! It was push all the way!!

For what seemed like forever, finally reached the peak and it was downhill for now. Adam stopped by the side of the road giving directions to go on ahead. Apple and Ari were still climbing. The rest had already sped far away so I was (as always) alone - in the darkness - again! The downhill was fun and scary at the same time cos there were no more cars and the only sounds that can be heard were of birds and animals and just then *WHOA!!* *SWERVE!!* there was this crazy homeless dude by the side of the road and I nearly banged into him.. BASTARD!!

We finally came to our 1st stop just as the sun light started peeking thru the clouds. It was a small rest area with a small waterfall. We took a breather, drank up, ate Powerbar and went to the loo. My knee started to hurt a little at this point and rubbed some deep heat onto it. Took a few pictures and we were off once again.

The climb was quite ok. We passed by some people parked by the side of the road collecting water from pipes that were coming out of the side of the hill... Then it was downhill again... The road was quite big and didn't have many cars... It was nice being able to go downhill without having to brake for dear life... but i still did once I hit 60kmh... the rest went up to 70++.

Ulu Yam town. Finally we were here and everyone went to the 7-11 to stock up. The town people having breakfast there looked at us funny. After stocking up, we headed to for "The Warong" which was the last stop before the major "CLIMB TO HELL"...

The climb towards the warong was HELL!! We stopped so many times after 200m riding. We were begining to think that the warong didn't exsit and that it was just a dangled carrot to keep our mind of the major climb... after what seemed like forever, my knee gave way and sadly had to load up my bike into the support car.. 100m away, was the warong.. LOL..

We had our fill and after a 15min rest, it was time to continue on. I unloaded my bike and Jo-Ann went on ahead 1st. Just as I kicked start, a sharp pain jolted my right knee and I nearly fell over... I knew this was it... I wasn't going to be able to continue.. FUCK!! Jo-Ann came back to get me and I road in the car the rest of the way.

The next 8km or so was really a CLIMB TO HELL... I have not seen Kah Lyn nor Aaron walk and push their bike so much... Ari and Apple practically stopped every 100m... Looking from inside the car, I felt relieved but at the same time dissappointed that I was not able to endure the HELL with my fellow comrades!! It was then, these tiny little riders, a few guys and a few girls in Selangor Jerseys, smoked each and everyone of them going up. They made it look easy and there were even some on MTB with offroad tires... HOLY SHIT!!

After what seemed like ages.. we finally reached the police checkpoint. Adam, Yong, Patrick and Fren had reached already. It was then that the quote of the day came "I DON'T NEED DOWNHILL... JUST GIVE ME A FLAT ROAD!!" ... Adam & Yong reached 45mins earlier and didn't even stop at all!! AMAZING!! After taking photos and resting abit, they continued on towards Gotong Jaya. We passed by the Genting Cable car and went to a nearby Mamak for lunch. The air was cool and nice and after lunch... it was downhill mayhem all the way to Gombak.

I tried to ride again but the pain was just too much to bear... so once again I hopped into the car and Apple hopped in later as well and we followed the rest of the guys downhill... they were super fast!! Adam as always was leading the way...

We finally reached back to the mamak at Gombak around 2 to 3pm... WOOHOOO!! They had survived and I will return to settle some unfinished business... but for now it was off to the Sports Clinic to have a look at the knee!!

FLU & FEVER!!

Since Tuesday night I had been having sore throat and slight flu... so I thought that sweating it out on the night ride would cure it... unfortunately it didn't... sigh

Wednesday the sickness starts... worked from home that day while on medication... kinda high most of the time but still managed to finish 1 program... by night time it started to feel a lot worst and couldn't cuddle my son to sleep... had to look at him from a distance only while wearing a face mask... sigh

Thursday (today) morning - felt like shit!! Fever and Flu came full blown... MC today... Slept the whole day till 3pm... felt so much better after overdosing myself on the meds.. cos later at 4am on Friday I have to be at Cyberjaya for the Visa/Mastercard April 2010 Compliance cut-over...

Coming Saturday is the big climb - ULU YAM and I wouldn't want to miss it for the world but unless I am a 100% fit, I will unfortunately have to skip it...

Anyway time to hit the sack again... gotta wake up at 3am later... overdosing myself once more... hope I manage to wake up... NIGHTZZZ

60km Night Ride

MEX Highway
Kesas Highway

RFC - Night Ride 13 April 2010 - Session 1 Mex Putrajaya Highway & Session 2 (Kesas USJ Loop) was the email title that flashed on my monitor... tonight's ride is on!!

After work, rushed home just in time to pick up my son from the babysitter, fix milk, pack my stuff and rushed off to meet Adam and Yong at the Sri Petaling mamak. No time for dinner so all I had was 1/3 of a PowerBar.

We started off around 8:15pm... and headed off to MEX Highway. The start of the highway was a curving climb.. not too bad if you had already built up momentum. Thankfully the weather held and it was a nice ride... managed to somehow catch up Adam & Yong sometimes (when the purposely slow down :P). There were 2 parts along the highway where it was totally dark... not sure why... the 1st dark zone was a climb and the other one was during the descent. Thankfully there were cars passing along the highway so we could see whether there were any obstacles on the emergency lane. We managed to reach the Toll in 30mins or so... not bad... now.. it was the ride back...

Just after the toll, there is a turn-off to do a U-turn and it goes down hill and after the U-turn is a climb... Adam & Yong sped down the slope and U-turn so fast they were out of sight in moments... as for me.. well, I tried to go as fast as I can taking the U-turn when just at the mid point, my front tire hit a pebble and bounced!! HOLY SHIT!! I was nearly thrown off balance but managed to somehow control the bike but had already lost all momentum and the climb sucked!!

The way back (to me) felt a lot more difficult... and at this point my right knee was hurting already. I thought I couldn't finish cos the pain was unbearable... I took a PowerGel and continued on... pulling upwards instead of pedalling downwards... this somehow lessen the stress on the knee... by this time Adam & Yong were already about 500m or more in front of me and after 10 more minutes, there were gone... and so I pushed myself as hard as I could and finally saw Bukit Jalil Stadium... I was back!!

I went all the way down to the Carrefour traffic lights (Adam & Yong - took a shortcut and headed straight to Sri Petaling LRT) and it was there at the traffic light that I had my 1st fall... Damnit!! Unclip left foot... tried to land on right foot... result : saw the ground come towards me and *CRASH*... nothing too serious just a few cuts and bruises... After pushing myself up with 1 hand, I pedalled on to the LRT and just as I was about to reach, I saw a bunch of cyclist had already started the ride to Kesas and seeing that Adam & Yong were not among them I went on to the LRT station.

Just as I arrived, Adam, Yong, Danny and Paul were ready to go also... so on we went... *huff* *puff*... it was a fast ride with average speeds of 30+. I was riding in behind Adam, and as I passed the 1st bump, I heard another *thud* behind me... I thought cannot be la... must be my imagination, and then i dropped gear and i heard the sounds of another gear dropping just behind me.. Thats when I looked at the ground and saw a shadow of a cyclist right behind me... HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK!! I pedalled super fast, just then the shadow overtook me and turned out to be a HUMAN cyclist... Thank God!!

This dude was fast and as he made his way up the group, the rest followed and I was left behind... With no more water, PowerGel and knee hurting it was a difficult to keep up but managed somehow to just come in behind them about 2minutes late. After a breather, we continued on... this time I was too tired to push anymore... and so went at a slower pace but at least I manged to increase my Avg Speed and didn't have to let the guys wait that long...

A few more rounds like this and I think I might just be able to keep the pace with these guys!!

Something Other Than Cycling

After helping the wifey with our son, I was out the door at 8:40am... and no I was not going for a ride... Wanted to do something diffrerent this weekend..

I was meeting up with Mr "Lampre" Helmi at the Guthrie Driving Range at 9am. My car air-cond was still not working but it was alright as the weather was cool... As I exited the highway onto a slip road, I saw the course on the right.. this was it.

Parked my car and unloaded my bag.. the driving range was a double story range.. You have to go get your own balls (golf balls) unlike the Sunway Range where they bring it to you.. anyway it was no biggie.. Helmi was on the 2nd floor and I went up to join him..

The SUN was blazing down on us.. there was no cover from it.. so as we hit balls after balls.. I think I lost 1 whole kg just by sweating alone.. finally finish all 100 balls and we hit the stalls for a drink.

This place has a 18 hole pitch and putt course and it only cost RM20 (though we did not have to pay). We tried out 2 holes before abandoning it cos it was almost noon and it was just too bloody hot to continue and also the fact that it is a walking course with no buggy.. and i was lugging around my full golf set!!

So off we went but will surely be back again with the other RFCs along!!

Euskaltel-Euskadi 2010

Euskaltel-Euskadi (UCI Team Code: EUS) is a professional road bicycle racing team. The team is commercially sponsored, but also works as an unofficial Basque national team and is partly funded by the Basque Government. Its riders are either Basque, or at least have grown up in the Basque cycling culture. Its sponsor is Euskaltel, a Basque telecom company. Euskatel-Euskadi is famous for its all-orange team kits, and it has been known to hand out orange Euskaltel t-shirts and Basque flags to fans when the Tour de France makes a swing into the Basque Country.

Euskaltel-Euskadi team equipment :
Bike: Orbea
Components: Shimano
Wheels: Shimano
Apparel: Etxe-Ondo
Saddles: Selle Italia
Helmets: Catlike

As you can see from the ORBEA-AQUA above, I am a big fan of this team and after getting the bike with the team color, I have been hunting high and low for the team outfits and finally today.. I found them!!

The order has been placed... Now waiting for the arrival... WOOOHOOOO!! I can't wait!!

A Message From Cameron Highlands

A text message from Kah Lyn (who is currently in Cameron Highlands with his family)

As I lay in bed this wet and deary morning,
it is 7am.
The sun is just peeping through the last of the clouds,
spent, having shed their burden last night.
The birds are stirring.
It is a new day.
The making of a beautiful day.
A day to spend cozy in the cool comfort
of a familiar sofa,
coffee brewing, favourite book in hand.
But... All of me and all that I am,
can only think of the long open road,
as I recall how it burned in the sun,
of each laboured breath,
of the thirst,
of how each climb punished tired legs,
and tested the soul.
Of how there is nowhere else I'd rather be
but in the company of
TEAM RFC!!
By Goh Kah Lyn
Couldn't have said it better myself...

A Wet Saturday Morning

6am... woke up with a startle... the sounds of thunder were rolling overhead... it was long and loud and finally pitter patter sounded on the roof... it was hard to hear at first, thought it was my imagination but then it came!! Pouring down like thunder!! RAIN!!

#%A$^&*HD(WD)!((!@*^! - I was cursing to myself...

Texted Ian and told him the ride was off, a few seconds later he texted back :

"Yalah, I heard thunder.... Okie back to sleep"

And so heavy heartedly, I went back to sleep as well... Another beautiful Saturday morning ride ruined by Rain... zzZZZzzZZzZZzZzzzzzz

A Truly Downhill 7 days

I just noticed that the past 7 days from today has been 1 downhill ride... and I don't mean it in a cycling way...

Last Wednesday, MU lost to Bayern Munich 2-1 in the 1st leg of the Champions League Quaterfinals.

Saturday, MU lost to Chelsea in the English Premier League with just 6 games to go.

Tuesday, Team RFC confirmed that the ULU YAM ride this coming Sunday was to be postponed to the following week and there was no Kesas Night Ride

Wednesday, had an emergency program migration to do and ended being late to pick up my son.

Thursday, MU won against Bayern Munich 3-2. The aggregate was 4-4 but Bayern went thru on away goals rulling.

7 days of down down down down down..... hope this coming weekend will be better!!

FRASER'S HILL CLIMB part 2

..as Patrick and I rode past the guard house, we were greeted by a single lane road, with trees on all sides, the canopy was thick, weather was cold and the REAL CLIMB started!! All 9km of it!!

It was switch back after switch back, and with each one was an even steeper climb... The gel kicked in 5minutes and I left Patrick behind... trying to make the most out of the gel, I pushed on eagerly... I kept remembering what Adam and Danny said, "The 1st 3km is the killer.. after that it is easy!!" I looked at my cyclo-com and it was 4km already... and it was not getting any easier!! At the 5km mark, Jo-Ann sped drove alongside me asking "OK?" All I could reply was with a weak show of 'thumbs up'... 20metres further I dismounted and started to push for a bit and then Steven Loh drove up beside me "Ok mou? Want to pull you up?" I was so tempted but decided against it and showed another weak show of 'thumbs up' and gestured him to go on.

1 minute later, I regretted not taking up his offer... I soldiered on and was way past my limit cos I knew I had hit a wall already. Legs were heavy and no strength left. I met a lorry just 3km from the peak and asked "Boleh tolong hantar naik ka?" "Sorry boss, kena kerja sini"... head hung low I pedalled on... The last 2.5km was a real nerve wrecker for me... it was so close yet felt so far away... I reseted the com and all I could do was concentrate on my cyclo-com showing 0.1, 0.2, 0.3...1.0....1.2 *CRAMPED* shit!! My calf was on the verge of cramping!! 1.4...1.5.... come on Terence!! You can do it!! I told myself.. 2.0...2.1.....2.2..... and FINALLY I saw the gate!! (not the pearly white gates)...

A sense of relief washed over me as I cycled past the guard house

and looked for the gang... Finally saw them past the ClockTower!! WOOHOOOO!! I MADE IT UP!!

Adam passed me a 100plus to drink and then I cramped.. LOL!!

Everyone was taking a breather, relaxing, phototaking and stuff... Steven Loh was there with his family and he brought some drinks and food for us

as the "American Breakfast" stall had moved further in... Apple was the next to reach

followed by Ian (apparently the drop in speed earlier on was because his saddle height was too low from offroad previously),
Patrick and finally Ari!!

Allan had a puncture on the way up and was pushing his bike up!!
We took a group photo at the Clock Tower

and then decsended! This was my most scary part for me. Helmi lead the way and was soon out of my sight. Kah Lyn and Adam zoomed past me shouting "LET GO OFF THE BRAKES la!!" I turned a deaf ear and then the rest sped past me and soon I was the last one behind. I took my time down and then came accross Kah Lyn who was pulling branches out of his Bike. He had a puncture and crashed. Further in front was another crash.. it was Adam!! It was then that I slowed down 1 more notch!!

Within a matter of minutes, they road past me again... and then I came upon Khoo who had a puncture. Yong and Danny were helping him out and I stopped to borrow my leg pump.. and chatted with Danny.. and the quote of the day came as I told him..

"My Uphill Top Speed is Higher Than My Downhill Speed"

He stared at me with blank expression...

The rest of the way a slow and easy ride for me until I was nearly runned over at a hairpin left turn. A waja was coming at me head on and somehow I managed to avoid him... it was then that it dawned to me... it was past 10am... traffic was coming up... Apple, Ari and I pushed the last 1km down to the Gap where the others were waiting at the mamak for lunch.

Then we fully saw how bad Adam & Kah Lyn's injury were...

I thought to myself... I need better brake pads!! After lunch and waiting for Jo-Ann to drive down, we continued our deccent to KKB. The sun was up already and it was getting hotter and hotter.

Finally back at the KKB town at 2pm. I was the 2nd last one to reach as usual... and sat down and drank 2 bowls of Ais Kacang... while the rest had Asam Laksa too... We chit chatted for a while and then it was time to say good bye... to go home and rejuvenate and wait for the next climb!!

NEXT WEEK... ULU YAM CLIMB!!
